I recently came across an art installation at a local art gallery showing a piece by Pilvi Takala. The work entitled Real Snow White was a short video (9 minutes 15 seconds) showing a park guest dressed up as Snow white. According to the accompanying text the guest is a huge fan of Disney’s Snow White, so she has come to the park dressed as her idol.
While standing outside of the park children around her notice that they are standing within the presence of snow white and get her autograph.
As you can see the costume is very authentic in detail to Disney’s character. Disney encourage their fans to dress up like princesses, after all they sell the costumes and lots of other merchandise. In the still taken from the video above you can see excited children and parents taking photographs of “snow white”.
It’s not too much longer before an official representation turns up.
On her website Pilvi Takala says “The fantasy of the innocent Snow White doing something bad is so obviously real, that the security guards and management refer to it when explaining why the visitor can’t enter the park dressed up as Snow White.”
To see a a 3 minute excerpt of the video visit http://www.pilvitakala.com/realsnowwhite01.html
After a brief chat with someone at the gallery is was suggested that the video highlighted a distaste for the fact that Disney didn’t want “Real Snow white” to be there as they we’re gaining money from it. From the write up on the website I picked out that the video highlighted Disney’s concern for “Real Snow White” being too real and potentially could be there for negative reasons.
It also bright up personally the concept of who is the “Real Snow White”? As theme park fans we stand next to the characters, hug shake their hand, get their autographs, but who actually are they. Without there costume on would you look twice? How is the Snow white within the gates any more REAL than the star of this video?
If art is about creating Discussion this one has worked very well in my head, even if I can see from a security reason why the unofficial Snow White can’t go in in costume
